Gymnastics
Gymnastics is a sport involving performance of exercises requiring physical strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, balance and grace. Artistic gymnastics is the best known and most popular of the gymnastics sports governed by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG). Artistic Gymnastics, typically involves the women's events of uneven parallel bars, balance beam, floor exercise, and vault. Men's events include floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and high bar. Gymnastics evolved from exercises used by the ancient Greeks, that included skills for mounting and dismounting a horse, and from circus performance skills. Other forms of gymnastics are rhythmic gymnastics, various trampolining sports, and aerobic and acrobatic gymnastics. |
Gymnastics is one of the oldest and most popular sports of the world. Perhaps it is one of the most natural sports in the world today which usually involves activities people often do beyond the gym class or competitions. Gymnastics includes running, climbing, jumping, tumbling or swinging. As a sport, modern gymnastics include the performance of a series of movements and usually featured in many prestigious sports events such as the Olympics.
To perform the gymnastics exercises properly, one needs to exhibit a considerable amount of physical strength, coordination and agility. Some of the exercises which add to gymnastics include floor exercises, balance beam, uneven bars, vault for women and high and parallel bars, vaults, floor exercises, pommel horse for men. Gymnastics is said to have evolved from the exercises performed by the ancient Greeks who used these skills for the mounting and dismounting of horses and also circus performance skills.
Gymnastics, however, is one of the most dangerous sports as the athletes who perform the exercises are exposed to constant risk of injury. The risks are usually in the form of the height of the apparatus, the speed of the exercises and the basic effect it has on the athlete's joints, muscles and bones. Many of the athletes who perform gymnastics have sustained serious and often long lasting injuries and even paralysis after serious accidents being occurred during a gymnastics performance.
Today, gymnastics can be categorized according to six different disciplines. These include artistic gymnastics, rhythmic and general gymnastics, sports aerobics and acrobatics and trampoline work. Of these six, the artistic along with the rhythmic gymnastics are the two most popular and are a part of the summer Olympic games which are held every four years.
Apart from being one of the major sports in the world today, the gymnastics is also a sport that people of different age groups and ability can attempt. The gymnastics also helps people master self discipline and independence. It helps in building strength and increasing both physical flexibility as well as agility. Gymnastics is highly recommended for children as it helps in developing a healthy mind as well as body.

TRIVIA....Where does Milk come from?
Milk producing Cow
On the farm
Did you know that cows don't chew their food - they just crop and swallow until they feel full. An average cow can eat up to 70 kg of grass a day! The cow makes up for not chewing by digesting her food extra slowly and thoroughly, using her four stomachs.
The unchewed grass goes straight into stomach number one until that stomach is full.
The grass then passes into stomach two where it starts to ferment and forms into balls called the cud. The cow then regurgitates the cud (brings it back up into her mouth) and rechews it.
A cow can spend as much as eight hours a day chewing her cud!
Once she has finished chewing her cud she swallows it again and it goes into her third stomach where it is broken up by bacteria.
The fourth and final stomach digests the thoroughly broken up grass and passes nutrients into the cow's bloodstream and udder where they are used to make milk.
A dairy cow produces about eight litres each time she is milked or about 16 litres per day. That's about 80 glasses of milk every day!
Milking
In New Zealand, most cows are milked twice a day - once early in the morning and once in the afternoon. Many years ago, cows were milked by hand, but now, most cows are milked by machine.
The farmer slips rubber-lined, metal teat cups onto the cow's udder where they're held on by suction. The cups are connected to a vacuum pump which mimics the rhythmic on-off pressure of a calf drinking.
Pipes carry the milk away from the cups and into a refrigerated vat where the milk stays until collected each day by a tanker from the local dairy factory.
Milking one cow usually takes about 10 minutes. Milking a herd of cows usually takes one hour to 90 minutes. When the cows are finished, the milking yard and machinery must be washed with hot water and special detergent until they're spotless.
Milk tankers are huge trucks with special refrigerated compartments that keep the milk cool from the farm all the way to the factory. The milk must be kept cool so it remains bacteria free.
Every day more than 500 tankers are on the road collecting the milk from farm vats all over New Zealand. They collect as much as 35 million litres a day!
Each tanker can hold around 27,000 litres of milk in its two compartments. The tankers are always kept very clean to protect the milk from bugs.
To get the milk from the farm to the tanker, the driver joins a loading hose to the farmer's vat and pumps the milk into the insulated holding tank in the truck.
Next, the driver takes two samples from each farm's milk for testing at the factory.
These important tests show if the milk is pure, and whether the farmer's shed is hygienic and his herd healthy. The tests also show how much fat and protein the milk contains - these factors determine how much the factory will pay for the milk.
Once the tankers have collected milk from all the farms on their run, they drive to the dairy factory and pump the milk into huge storage silos.

Milk is processed very quickly to make sure it stays fresh!
Pasteurisation
No matter what final product the milk will become - butter, milk powder, cheese - it's first pasteurised.
Pasteurisation heats the raw milk to a very high temperature (73°C) for 15 seconds and then cools it rapidly. This heating kills micro-organisms that could cause disease and also lengthens the life of the milk.
Standardisation
The amount of cream in milk changes at different times of the year, and the amount of cream is different for each cow! But since we like milk to taste the same each time we drink it, it needs to be "standardised".
First, the cream is separated from the skim milk using a giant spinner called a separator. The machine spins around very fast which makes the cream and skim milk separate from each other. Some of the cream is used to make butter or fresh cream, and some of the skim milk is kept as well.
The rest of the cream and skim milk can then be recombined in just the right amounts to make whole milk, cheese and yoghurts!
Making fresh milk last longer
UHT Milk (UHT stands for Ultra Heat Treated) has been heated so that all the bacteria and other germs in it are removed. It is then packed in aseptic packaging so that no new bugs can get in! Using UHT, milk can last up to 12 months.
Another way to make milk last longer is to remove all the water - so you get milk powder. Milk powder is made by putting fresh milk into a huge dryer.
Milk powder is also much lighter than fresh or UHT milk so it's easy to transport all around the world.

If you have bow legs or knock knees you may be at higher risk for injuries during high-impact exercise such as running or aerobics.
Knees that are significantly angled (either in or out) can put added strain on the joints of the hips, knees, lower legs, ankles, and feet.
Typically, a runner who has knock knees will pronate (the ankles and feet roll inward too much). A bow legged runner is more likely to supinate (the ankles and feet roll out).
To check yourself, stand in front of a mirror with your feet hip-width apart. If your kneecaps are not aligned with the center of your feet and turn inward, you have some degree of knock knee. If they are not aligned with the center of your knee, but turn outward, you may be bow legged.
If you have knock knees or bow legs and do high-impact activities such as running, you might be a good candidate for an orthotic.
A visit to orthopedic physician or a physical therapist may help you identify a need for special inserts or a modified exercise program.
If you have lower leg pain, you could try cycling or swimming as an alternative form of exercise.

What is good posture?
Posture is the position in which you hold your body upright against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down. Good posture involves training your body to stand, walk, sit and lie in positions where the least strain is placed on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement or weight-bearing activities. Proper posture:
• Keeps bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are being used properly.
• Helps decrease the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in arthritis.
• Decreases the stress on the ligaments holding the joints of the spine together.
• Prevents the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions.
• Prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy.
• Prevents strain or overuse problems.
• Prevents backache and muscular pain.
• Contributes to a good appearance.
Proper posture requirements
Correct Sitting Position
1. Sit up with your back straight and your shoulders back. Your buttocks should touch the back of your chair.
2. All three normal back curves should be present while sitting. A small, rolled-up towel or a lumbar roll can be used to help you maintain the normal curves in your back.
Here's how to find a good sitting position when you're not using a back support or lumbar roll:
o Sit at the end of your chair and slouch completely.
o Draw yourself up and accentuate the curve of your back as far as possible. Hold for a few seconds.
o Release the position slightly (about 10 degrees). This is a good sitting posture.
3. Distribute your body weight evenly on both hips.
4. Bend your knees at a right angle. Keep your knees even with or slightly higher than your hips. (use a foot rest or stool if necessary). Your legs should not be crossed.
5. Keep your feet flat on the floor.
6. Try to avoid sitting in the same position for more than 30 minutes.
7. At work, adjust your chair height and work station so you can sit up close to your work and tilt it up at you. Rest your elbows and arms on your chair or desk, keeping your shoulders relaxed.
8. When sitting in a chair that rolls and pivots, don't twist at the waist while sitting. Instead, turn your whole body.
9. When standing up from the sitting position, move to the front of the seat of your chair. Stand up by straightening your legs. Avoid bending forward at your waist. Immediately stretch your back by doing 10 standing back bends.
10. Contributes to a good appearance.

Basket Drills
Kid Basketball Drill #1 - Figure 8 Dribble
Drill Purpose
This drill will improve your players dribbling ability, increase finger tip strength, and teach them how to change direction with the ball.
Instructions
1. You want to start with a wide base (feet spread slightly further than shoulder width apart)
2. Start with your right hand, dribble around the back of your right leg.
3. When you feel like you can not dribble any further with your right hand, cross frontwards between your legs to your left hand.
4. Dribble around the outside and the back of your left leg until you can not go any further, then cross frontwards between your legs to your right hand.
5. Repeat the process. With your dribble, it should form an imaginary sideways 8.
6. After doing this for a little while, go the opposite way. Instead of crossing frontwards between your legs, cross backwards between your legs.
Points of Emphasis
continually tell your players to...
• At first, you may want to start this drill by looking at the ball.
• As you improve, try to keep your head up.
• Always use your fingertips.
• Dribble as quickly as possible around your legs, while under control.
• You should take 4 to 5 dribbles around each leg.
Tip #1 - This drill may take awhile for a player to get accustomed to, but if he/she continues to practice this drill. The player's dribbling will get much better.
Tip #2 - Variations:
- Dribble the ball slightly above your knees.
- Put one-hand behind your back and try to perform the dribble with one hand.
- Try walking up and down the court while performing this dribble.

Kids Basketball Drill #2 - Defensive Slide
Drill Purpose
This drill will improve defensive form and quickness.
Instructions
1. Have the desired number of players line up on opposite sides of the lane, with the same number of players in each lane, if possible.
2. When the whistle blows, the first player in each line will sprint to the free throw line and make a 180 degree turn, thus facing the baseline. He/she will then do foot fires (tap his/her feet in place) as fast as possible until the whistle is blown again.
3. When the whistle is blown again, the first group will slide to the sideline closest to them. The second group will repeat what the first group did in step 2.
4. The whistle is blown again, and the first group will slide to the mid-court line. The second group will repeat what group 1 did in step 3, and group 3 will do what group 2 did in step 3.
5. Repeat this process until all groups have arrived at the mid-court line, and then start all over again if deemed necessary.
Points of Emphasis
continually tell your players to...
• Keep their head up when sliding.
• Keep their arms out when sliding.
• Avoid clicking their feet together when sliding.
• Work on defensive form first, and once technique is correct, then worry about speed.
Motivation / Teaching Tips
Tip #1 - This is not a competition, so let your kids know that form is much more important than speed initially.
Tip #2 - Let your players know that defense is just as important as scoring baskets, and a good defender is just as valuable to the team as a good scorer.

However, along with these essential components, a comprehensive fitness program that is tailored to an individual will probably focus on one or more specific skills[3], and on age-[4] or health-related needs such as bone health[5]. Many sources also cite mental and emotional health as an important part of overall fitness. This is often presented in textbooks as a triangle made up of three sub-sections, which represent physical, emotional, and mental fitness. Hence, one may be physically fit but may still suffer from a mental illness or have emotional problems. The "ideal triangle" is balanced in all areas. Physical fitness can also prevent or treat many chronic health conditions brought on by unhealthy lifestyle or aging[6]. Working out can also help people sleep better[citation needed]. To stay healthy it's important to participate in physical activity[7].
Specific fitness
Specific or task-oriented fitness is a person's ability to perform in a specific activity with a reasonable efficiency: for example, sports or military service. Specific training prepares athletes to perform well in their sports.
Examples are:
• 400m sprint - in a sprint the athlete must be trained to work anaerobically throughout the race.
• Marathon - in this case the athlete must be trained to work aerobically and their endurance must be built-up to a maximum.

Madalas kapag may nakikita tayong mataba, agad binabansagang “obese” o “overweight”. Pero magkaiba ang mga salitang ito, Nalalaman kung obese o overweight ang isang tao sa pamamagitan ng body mass index (BMI) O PROPORSYON NG BIGAT NG TAO SA KANYANG TANGKAD. Kunin ang bigat in kilograms, tapos i-divide ito sa “square” ng iyong tankad in meters. Ayon sa World Health Organization (WHO), ang BMI na mahigit sa 25Kg. /m2 ay masasabing overweight habang ang BMI na mahigit sa 30Kg. ay sinasabi naming obese.

Dream and Passion
“The Meek Molders of Man's Character" is how Dr. Jose P. Laurel described teachers....
Aside from the fact that teachers are exalted individuals, I still could not fathom then why I decided to become one of them. Whenever I'm confronted with such a question, I SIMPLY REPLY... YOUR DREAM IS MY PASSION.
Personally I feel bad when people belittle the teaching profession. And it hurts me even more to hear demeaning comments such as "there’s no money in it," you will be doomed to poverty," etc...
Yes, it's true it's not a lucrative job.
It isn't an economically enriching and rewarding one.... But despite the disconcerting state of the teaching profession itself, I'm still not dissuaded from becoming a teacher.
My reasons though a bit hard to articulate, are nevertheless intrinsically and extrinsically motivated.
To begin with, my reason for choosing this profession is quite simple: to ensure my basic needs. So basic are my needs that if I fail to meet them, I will surely die. As a human being, of course, I need to keep my body and soul together. I need to sustain my body and mind in order to survive and keep my sanity.
This I can probably do if I were to become a teacher. I need to have a job to that would provide me a decent income. Whether I will be compensated well or not is another matter.
Although other professions are far more profitable than teaching, I will still go for teaching. The reason why is that I don't live to merely eat. I believe I'm capable reaching greater heights; of fulfilling sublime needs.
The second reason why I choose teaching to be my profession is that I want to be safe from cheaters who take advantage of someone's ignorance; from people who look down on someone who has not achieved much in life; from events that may endanger me because I don't know their complexities.
The third reason that drives me to choose this profession is the fact that teachers, considering that they loved and accepted individuals in society. That our society's class system is not that rigid is true; and though the help of teachers, people can uplift their status. Teachers are thus loved, for the people, especially the poor who value education, have pinned their high hopes on their teachers.
The fourth reason why I want to become a teacher is that you become adequate, competent and confident when you are a teacher. Indeed you become adequate because you have successfully imparted what you have to impart; competent because, in your desire to give the best, you continue to strive for excellence; and confident because of the belief that what you have instilled in them is of certain value to them.
People may thank doctors for curing their sickness and saving their lives; lawyers for freely rendering their legal services and defending them in litigation. But behind all these people are teachers who worked relentlessly, teachers without whose knowledge, competence and genuine affection, we surely couldn't have doctors, lawyers etc.
The ultimate reason why I would rather be a TEACHER than settle for being something else is that being ONE means that one is a person who has actualized one's innate desire to touch people's lives; to bring them in accomplishing something better; to bring them the pinnacle of learning; and to mold them into persons who are aware of their potentials.
"TEACHERS", to use Sharon Draper's words, “must be celebrated for moving civilization from ignorance to enlightenment, from apathy to responsibility.
